Legal Experience

At Adlington Law, we provide the following legal services.

Tax Planning - Canada

We responsibly:

  • Avoid
  • Defer / Accelerate
  • Divide
  • Deduct
  • Shift
  • Recharacterize
  • Match / Mismatch
  • Pay No More Than Once

to alleviate your taxing burdens.

Tax Dispute Resolution

We assist taxpayers through any review or audit process commenced by a taxing authority.

When a dispute arises with a taxing authority, we have extensive experience through multiple channels to resolve these disputes (or take some chips off the table to reduce the scope of advancing disputes) through:

  • CRA Objections (CRA Appeals Directorate);
  • CRA Voluntary Disclosures
  • Tax Court of Canada appeals
  • Federal Court of Appeal appeals
  • Federal Court of Canada judicial review
  • Provincial / Territorial court appeals and remediation orders
  • Provincial / Territorial remission orders

Advocacy and negotiation occurs at all stages and in all of these forums.  I love a good debate.  I abhor long and expensive trials - the costume I have to wear is too bulky.

Estate Planning

Proper estate planning is more than just a will.  Proper estate planning comprehensively considers the needs of all family members.  In the context of modern families with modern needs, we will advise you upon and help you craft (and not just draft):

  • Wills, including for those in Ontario Primary, Secondary, and (where needed) Tertiary Wills
  • Trust planning within wills
  • Trust planning beyond your wills, including discretionary family trusts, alter ego trusts, and joint partner trusts
  • Lifetime benefit trusts for disabled family members
  • Beneficiary designations
  • Powers of Attorney for Property
  • Powers of Attorney for Personal Care
  • Letters of Wishes when flexibility or enhanced privacy is desired
  • Statutory Declarations when a future dispute is anticipated
  • Executor / Attorney / Trustee Compensation Agreements
  • Written Advice for your Executor(s) and Attorney(s)

In all of our estate planning work, we consider and plan for anticipated tax in the year of death and in the years that follow as well as all required compliance.

We are allies for all members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities and welcome the opportunity to assist you with your unique estate planning needs.

Estate Administration

Death is tragic.  At every age.  When death inevitably occurs, we are here to help your family through the estate administration process to provide for an efficient transfer of assets in accordance with the wishes of the deceased within the bounds of the law, including:

  • Advising when probate is required and representing the executor / administrator through that process
  • Advising on the transfer of those assets for which probate is not required
  • Advising the executor / administrator on their duties and rights
  • Advising beneficiaries of their rights
  • Assisting with required communications
  • Assisting with tax compliance
  • Assisting with obtaining all available government benefits
  • Advising upon and implementing post-mortem tax planning

Where estates are disputed, we work with other law firms to help design plans that attempt to work through those disputes.

We are ready to help you.

About Adlington Law

Adlington Law was founded in 2025 by Ray Adlington after he spent 25 years as partner of two of Canada's largest law firms.  It's a very creative name for a law firm chosen by a creative lawyer.  While physically working from the centralized location in southwestern Ontario of Woodstock, Ray is originally from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and welcomes every opportunity to (virtually or in person) return to Atlantic Canada.  We are an entirely paper-free law firm, with all digital files securely stored on a cloud server.  We embrace all modern software, including AI-supported legal research, drafting, and diagramming, to deliver our services efficiently.  We do not take meetings before 10:00 because Ray is not a morning person.

Tax Legal Team

Meet the team

Adlington Law is a family business serving families and their businesses across Canada (outside Quebec). We use modern software to develop and implement our modern advice for your modern tax, succession, estate planning, and estate administration opportunities or challenges. With tax authorities, we advocate, negotiate, and cajole while standing ready to argue when that voice is needed. We collaborate with and communicate with your other professional advisors to avoid cracks in the cement.

Ray draws upon his 30-year collection of curated plans built with families of all types and businesses in nearly all sectors to:

  • reduce or defer tax in all its many forms,
  • establish or reorganize corporations of all types, trusts of all types, and general or limited partnerships,
  • align needs across borders,
  • avoid or resolve disputes with Canadian taxing authorities,
  • protect assets,
  • promote family cohesion, and
  • support major transactions during your business cycle.

Based in southwestern Ontario for the past six years, and with Atlantic Canadian roots for the preceding twenty-five years, Ray is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, past national President of the Canadian Bar Association, and a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation.  Ray is a past sessional instructor at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University and a frequent writer and presenter on tax law topics.  Look to his LinkedIn page for Ray's musings.

Ray Adlington

Tax Lawyer

I have earned all of my grey hair practicing tax law since 1997. I focuses on corporate tax, personal tax, commodity tax, and a dash of tax dispute resolution on behalf of taxpayers because I like to argue and need a constructive outlet. Finally, I know where the capital dividend account is hidden and how to maximize the number of jellybeans in the jar.
